This is one of those recipes that is so simple I feel silly even writing a recipe for it, but I definitely don’t want you to miss out on this recipe because it is TOO easy and delicious, that just wouldn’t be fair. It tastes like an orange julius or a blended up creamsicle and only has 6 simple ingredients!
Truth be told I was in a pseudo- recovery from my eating disorder for years and in that time I thought that smoothies needed to have 100 ingredients and tons of vegetable to be healthy. But as a dietitian I can tell you that is not true, what really makes a smoothie nutritious is ensuring you have protein, fats, and carbs mixed in as well as some form of produce for an extra boost of micronutrients. This is the combo that will leave you feeling satisfied long after you finish and give you energy to go about your day.
In this smoothie the fruits are providing carbohydrates, potassium, vitamin C, fiber, and flavanoids just to name a few. The almond butter is providing a healthy source of fat and helping create a creamy texture. The protein powder helps add some extra protein to help increase the satisfaction factor and keep you full. Everything in this smoothie is purposeful and yet it still taste absolutely delicious. So I am here to tell you that you can have a perfectly healthy and balanced smoothie sans veggies.
Orange Creamsicle Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 large sumo tangerine
- 1 small frozen banana
- 1 handful ice
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1 Tbsp almond butter
- Almond/coconut milk to desired consistency
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth and enjoy!
Tips:
- Sumo citrus is great for this because it has no seeds but you could subsitute any variety of orange or tangerine into this recipe, just be weary of the seeds. In addition, if you choose a less sweet or more bitter orange like the cara cara you may want to add some additional Orange juice or sweetener.
- I used 1 scoop (1/2 serving) of the Vegan Smart Plant Based Protein in recipe testing. I have linked it here.
